Project Overview

The Chadstone Shopping Centre Stage 40 development involved construction of a new 10 level office tower, alongside a major luxury retail extension. Much of the development was built over existing structure, which resulted in the need for footing strengthening and carbon fibre wrapping of existing columns.

Baigents were responsible for all structural and civil engineering design, documentation and site supervision, together with the shop detailing of all structural steelwork for the project. This allowed the shop detailing to proceed in conjunction with the design documentation. The work was carefully staged to minimise disruption to the operation of the shopping centre.

Key technical challenges

  • Composite steel beam and slab design of new retail floors
  • Post-tensioned concrete design of new retail and carpark floors
  • Carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) strengthening of existing structural elements
  • Complex lateral stability design involving a combination of shear cores, walls and bracing
  • Design of support structure for feature gridshell roof
  • Design and assessment of existing structure for additional loading and floor levels
  • Strict design requirements for high-profile tenants
