Project Overview

The Pt. Leo Estate restaurant and cellar door involved the construction of a reinforced shotcrete curved wall entry and structural steel framed building on a coastal site featuring an established vineyard and panoramic views. The curved wall entry acts as a cantilever retaining wall for the grape vines.

Due to its elevated coastal location, the design and structure of the steel frame needed to take into account the high winds in the area. The radical design of the building separates the three zones, consisting of the entry arbour, cellar door and restaurants.

Key technical challenges

  • Refined design analysis to obtain suitable form of construction for the cantilever retaining wall
  • Design needed to account for the 3-D nature of the curved wall, resulting in the use of reinforced concrete installed by the method of shotcreting
  • Analysis of the steel framed building to withstand the unusual load combinations of high winds and elevated position in coastal area
